COIMBATORE: An awareness programme on health and hygiene was organised for the tribal communities at Puthupathy near Navakkarai by Mano Shanthi, a family-counselling centre of the Young Women's Christian Association. Volunteers spoke about the ill effects of addiction and drug abuse, at the camp, held recently in association with the Department of English of PSGR Krishnammal College. Alcoholism and drug abuse were common among the tribals and there was a need to address these issues, Stella Issac, General Secretary, Mano Shanthi said. Through role plays, the volunteers hoped to convey the message of saying `no' to alcohol and other substances that could be abused. Such camps would motivate the tribals to adopt clean habits, Ms.Stella said. The programme was organised as part of the outreach activities of the counselling centre. Mano Shanthi worked for the support of families and individuals in distress. Functioning under the Central Social Welfare Board, it provided free counselling to those who required psychological reassurance. Those who sought help would not be discriminated on any basis, Ms.Stella said. Counselling services would be provided at the centre from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on all days except Sundays.
