George Bishop Jr. is heading the English Lecturers Retraining Programme in the State

KURNOOL: George Bishop Jr., Senior English Language Fellow, said medical and information technology professionals were in good demand in the United States. Addressing the students of KVR College for Women here on Tuesday, he said good communication skills in English would fetch plum jobs in the national and international job market.

Mr. Bishop is heading the English Lecturers Retraining Programme, sponsored by the Department of Collegiate Education, in the State. The programme, which started last year, would end in July this year. Mr. Bishop and his team retrained the English teachers across the State last year and held workshops as follow-up action and study the impact of the training programme.

Soft skills

Mr. Bishop told the students that the corporate employers would expect logical thinking, good communication skills in English and soft skills among the young graduates. He said most of the students here who completed graduation were unable to acquire good communication skills in English due to various factors. The programme aimed at re-orienting English language teaching in the colleges.

Mr. Bishop said the American education system encouraged the students to challenge their teachers in the classroom, which were small. On the other hand, Indian students remained obedient and passive listeners in the classroom.

Free education

In an informal chat with the students, Mr. Bishop said the United States were created by immigrants, who valued democracy and freedom. Since migrants are considered the best brains, top talent is collected in the US in a way. Though education is expensive in the private sector in the U.S., he said, the public sector offered free education up to college level. According to him, Germany had effective English language programme, which ensured the best result with one-hour instruction every day.

He felt that the Department of School Education should do some thing to improve English language teaching in schools.

Principal H. Malini Paul presided. English teachers -- Ayesha Khatoon, M. Sarat Babu, Madhavi Latha, Jnana Joseph and Glory -- and others were present.
