HCL centre for Smiths Aerospace

Staff Correspondent

CHENNAI: Smiths Aerospace, part of Britain's Smiths Group, has set up an engineering services centre in India in partnership with HCL Technologies.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mike Taylor, Vice-President (Supply Chain), Aerospace, said the facility was the result of an agreement between Smiths Aerospace and HCL Technologies signed in December last year. Financial details were not disclosed.

Under the agreement, HCL would provide the resources and management at the centre with 60 assigned positions for engineering services.

Dedicated facility

The dedicated facility would be located at HCL's development centre at Ambattur Industrial Estate in Chennai.

Mr. Taylor said the centre was the result of a successful and growing relationship between Smiths Aerospace and HCL, which began in 2005. He said his company would have a cost savings of 25-40 per cent, depending on the nature of work and skill sets by outsourcing work to HCL.

Ramesh Pillai, Director Aerospace Practice, North America, said the dedicated design centre would cater to Smiths Aerospace's global engineering requirements and would quickly ramp up to over 150 dedicated professionals offering a multitude of IT and engineering services. Smiths Aerospace would benefit from HCL's innovative business models, value-centric approach and integration with Smiths' customers.
