BANGALORE: The former Railway Minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief said on Tuesday that the Railways had not done enough to attract freight movement from the private sector. In a statement here, Mr. Sharief said the Railways had achieved a turnaround in recent years without major shifts in its traditional sources of freight traffic such as steel, coal, cement, petroleum, and foodgrains. Mr. Sharief said the Railways should use cash surplus of Rs. 20,000 crore for improving the track record on safety, general cleanliness and passenger amenities. The projects could be executed through partnership between the Centre and States.
