BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Commission for Women will take it up with the Police Department if police officers refuse to register complaints by women or fail to come to their rescue, commission chairperson Pramila Nesargi said here on Monday. She told presspersons here that on a visit to Mangalore on Sunday, she had noticed that several complaints by women were gathering dust. She said she took the Inspector-General of Police in charge of the area to task and he has now promised to furnish details of the status of every case. "I will monitor everything, and I will summon police officers and others if they fail to do their job," Ms. Nesargi said. The commission will hold workshops and round tables on various topics from March 8, International Women's Day. Ms. Nesargi said the recent Supreme Court judgment that "nudity is not obscenity" and the impact of this judgment on women would be one of the workshop themes. She said another judgment that money given to the bridegroom's family to buy consumer goods or other needs is not "dowry" would be another topic.
Agenda
Ms. Nesargi, who took charge last week, said her agenda would include legal literacy for women about laws relating to them, re-energising the family counselling centres; increasing the presence of the commission in the districts. Ms. Nesargi also plans to set up mahila sahaya vedikes in districts. The commission can be contacted on Ph: 080-22216485.
