CBI team questioning Surya Rao

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Tuesday questioned Surya Rao, former Protector of Emigrants, Thiruvananthapuram, who has been accused of amassing wealth by helping fraudulent agencies to recruit personnel for overseas jobs.

Mr. Rao, who had been hiding since June last when the CBI raided his office, was arrested at Visakhapatnam on Saturday. He was brought to Kochi late last evening, presented before the CBI court here and remanded to three days' custody.

The CBI had raided Mr. Rao's office following complaints of large-scale fraud and bribery. He and two of his staff members had allegedly illegally helped several recruiting and travel agencies and made a lot of money. However, he slipped out and went hiding. He moved the High Court for anticipatory bail, but the court told him to first present himself before the CBI investigators.

CBI detectives on Saturday found him residing anonymously, along with his wife and daughter, at the Railway Colony at Visakhapatnam. The raid on Mr. Rao's office led to the tightening up of rules and monitoring of officials. CBI sources said the investigators would continue to question Mr. Rao for two more days.
