Coastal security to be intensified in Cuddalore

NEW ASSIGNMENT: Pradip Kumar taking charge as Superintendent of Police of Cuddalore district on Monday.

CUDDALORE: Security will be tightened along the coast in Cuddalore district, which has 54 coastal villages under eight police stations, the new Superintendent of Police, Pradip Kumar, said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after assuming office, he said coastal security had assumed special significance after the recent seizure of improvised explosive devices off the Tamil Nadu coast.

Regular patrols

As directed by Inspector General of Police (North Zone) K. Radhakrishnan, "coastal village vigilance committees" had been set up to track suspicious movement of people and vessels. Besides increasing the number of intelligence officers in the coastal villages, police personnel would conduct regular patrols along the coast.

The committees would be strengthened and the police would interact constantly with the coastal community.

Checkpoints

Mr. Kumar, who was Assistant Superintendent of Police in Chidambaram before taking up his new assignment, said checkpoints had been set up at Reddichavadi, Pudhuchathiram and Vallampadugai on East Coast Road, and in the coastal villages of Killai, Porto Novo and Thazhanguda. He promised to make basic policing a priority to instil confidence in the people and expedite crime detection, besides steps to reduce the number of warrants pending.

The services of the regular village vigilance committees would be utilised to get information on any untoward incident. Mr. Kumar also vowed to eradicate the illicit arrack trade and strictly enforce traffic regulations.
