Reconnection mela

TIRUNELVELI: The Tirunelveli Telecom District of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has proposed to conduct a special `mela' for re-connecting closed telephones in the district.

According to the General Manager, BSNL, V. Raju, the special drive would be organised in the telephone exchanges at Tirunelveli (March 1), Palayamkottai (March 2), Tenkasi (March 3), Sankarankovil (March 5), Ambasamudram (March 6), Nanguneri (March 7), Valliyoor (March 8), Kadayanallur (March 9), Shencottai (March 12) and Thisayanvilai (March 13), Mr. Raju said adding that more information can be had from 1095.

Watery grave for student

Nagercoil: The Fire Service personnel recovered the body of a Plus One student of Puducherry, from the tank of Suchindrum temple on Tuesday. According to police, Manikandan(17) of Pudicherry, studying in Kalaingar Karunanidhi Government School came to Suchindrum along with 108 students. While taking bath in the tank he reportedly drowned. The police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and recovered his body and sent it for post-mortem. Further investigations are on. — Staff Reporter

Patrolling intensified

Nagapattinam : The Coast Guard has intensified patrolling along the 188-km coastline in the district, following a firing incident by Sri Lankan Navy on fishermen.

Official sources said the Coast Guard had been instructed to protect the fishermen venturing into the sea.

The district administration has encouraged the fishermen to venture into the sea for fishing as usual and assured them of protection by the Coast Guard. —

MDMK cadres arrested

PERAMBALUR : A total of 42 volunteers of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam were taken into custody when they attempted to observe fast at Theradi here on Tuesday condemning `the maladministration of the municipality.'

The arrested included the district secretary of the party, K. Chinnappa and the town secretary Chinna Rajendran.

The police dismantled the shamiana at the Theradi junction. The party cadres raised slogans condemning the `abrupt withdrawal of permission granted by police earlier for the democratic stir.'

TIRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam stood at 81.82 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday.

The inflow was 613 cusecs and the discharge was 1,500 cusecs. — Special Correspondent

`Sign in Tamil'

ERODE: Collector T. Udhaychandran has asked officials to sign the Government documents and other related papers in Tamil as per the Government instruction. He also wanted the officials to redress the grievances of the people in time. He was receiving petitions at the grievances meeting on Monday. Bogus family cards seized

ERODE: Revenue officials while conducting a survey in Vaniputhur, Nambiyur, Elathur and Kugaloore areas noticed some persons possessing extra family cards. The officials seized 39 such cards. Cases were registered against the cardholders. - Staff Reporter

Two killed

RASIPURAM: Two persons were killed when a lorry hit a moped here on Monday.

Police said the deceased were identified as Kumar (28) of Puthupalayam and Sri Devi (25) of Kattanachampatti. - Staff Reporter

Special train to Ahmedabad

Chennai: To clear extra rush of passengers, a special train will run from Chennai Central to Ahmedabad on March 1. Train No. 0646 will leave Chennai Central at 10.15 a.m. on March 1 and reach Ahmedabad at 9 p.m. the next day.

The composition of the train will be 10 Sleeper Class, one second class sitting and two luggage-cum-brake van coaches. It will halt at Gudur, Nellore, Vijayawada, Warangal, Balharsha, Wardha, Badnera, Akola, Bhusaval, Jalgaon, Surat, Vadodara and Anand. Reservation will commence on February 28, according to a railway release. — Special Correspondent

Rama Navami at Oppiliappan temple

CHENNAI: Sri Rama Navami will be celebrated at the Oppiliappan temple near Kumbakonam from March 19.

Important events of the 10-day festival include Sita Kalyanam (March 27); Pattabhishekham and Kanakabhishekham (March 28). Kanakabhishekam for Anjaneyaswami will be performed on March 29.

Railway budget disappointing: Vaiko

CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Tuesday termed the railway budget "disappointing."

In a statement here, he said the budget was not pro-poor. It focussed on promoting container traffic instead of enhancing passenger facilities. Though the budget spoke of introduction of five new trains for the State, sufficient funds had not been earmarked for infrastructure development. It was silent on steps to ensure passenger safety. — Special Correspondent

10 missing fishermen return to Pamban

RAMANATHAPURAM: Ten of the 17 fishermen, who were missing since February 13, returned to Pamban on Tuesday.

The Sri Lankan fishermen released them following negotiations between local fishermen's associations of the two countries. They returned to the shore in a boat that had been seized by Sri Lankan fishermen.

Personnel of various intelligence agencies including IB, `Q' branch CID interrogated them. S. Velpandian, Assistant Director of Fisheries, said he had information that the remaining 7 fishermen were on their way to Pamban in another boat. A report had been sent to the Government. — Staff Reporter

2 held for using forged passports

CHENNAI: Immigration authorities at the Anna International airport here detained two persons, who landed early on Tuesday morning, on charges of using forged passports. According to officials, the two travelled by an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah. One of them was found carrying a forged passport, while the other used a photo-substituted passport to reach Chennai. Of them, Thanga Durai Selvarasu was holding a passport in the name of Natarajan. A check revealed he had used a forged passport. The second passenger Mohammed Riyaz came in the name of Periyasamy Murugesan by the same flight. — Staff Reporter
