DHARWAD: The 43rd death anniversary of Alur Venkatarao, who took the lead in the movement for unification of Karnataka, was observed here on Sunday. A book "Karnataka Kulapurohita Alur Venkatarao Samagra Krutigalu, Samputa-1 Ekikarana Itihasa" was released on the occasion. Karnataka Kulapurohita Alur Venkatarao Pratisthana had organised the programme. Delivering a special lecture, historian Suryanath Kamat said Alur Venkatarao sowed the seeds of unification movement and dedicated his life for the cause. Dr. Kamat elaborated on the services of Alur Venkatarao and traced the history of the unification movement. Releasing the book, freedom fighter Harnahalli Ramaswamy said there was a need for another movement to wake up people in slumber. People had become mute spectators to the developments in the country. They should wake up and protest, he said. Presiding over the function, TSR award winner Surendra Dani recalled the contributions of Alur Venkatarao because of the influence of which several eminent persons got involved in the unification movement. President of the Pratisthana Srinivas Ritti briefed about the activities of the foundation.
