Government will uphold justice in education sector, says Chief Minister

Achuthanandan calls for consensus on the issue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said the Government will make efforts to uphold the principles of equity and social justice enshrined in the much-debated Self-financing Professional Colleges Bill.

Inaugurating the main building of the LBS Institute of Technology for Women here on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said the Government was holding discussions with the managements of self-financing colleges for evolving a consensus in this regard. The legal battle for protecting the Bill would be pursued in the Supreme Court vehemently, he said.

On the other side, the Government would also strengthen the self-financing educational institutions in the public sector like the LBS institutes and the IHRD centres as part of the efforts to resist the exploitation of the students by private groups in this sector, Mr. Achuthanandan said. He alleged that some of the private managements were trying to exploit the educational sector. Systematic efforts were being made by some sections to ensure that the students who emerged out of the campuses in future would be devoid of any social or political sensitivity, by blocking any form of interventions in those directions, the Chief Minister said. The Chief Minister said even though Kerala was often being praised for its achievements in the educational sector, the State had to trek miles for ensuring quality education. The inability of the students from Kerala to perform well in the national-level competitive exams was the result of the poor quality of education, and rigorous efforts would have to be made to overcome this, he said.
