Governor urges PSUs to be competitive

Inaugurates Silver Jubilee celebrations of HNL

KOTTAYAM: Governor R.L. Bhatia has stressed the need for public sector undertakings (PSUs) to be competitive and result-oriented while pursuing a policy of sustainable development in the changed economic climate.

The Governor was inaugurating the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Hindustan Newsprint Limited (HNL), the subsidiary of public sector Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC), at Newsprint Nagar near Vaikom on Monday.

The Expansion-cum-Diversification Project (EDP) which was under way at the HNL would go a long way in the company's pursuit of focused development, he said. It was a timely move on the part of the HNL to diversify into production of writing and printing paper, he said and pointed out that the demand for affordable writing and printing paper would be on the increase on account of the massive literacy and basic education programmes taken up by the Union Government.

Mr. Bhatia commended the HNL for the social development activities it had taken up during the past quarter of a century and said any undertaking, be it public or private, would have to be enlightened enough to rise to societal causes as well.

The Governor noted that the HNL had grown over the years into one of the finest and foremost integrated newsprint mills in the country and hoped the company leadership would take the silver jubilee as an occasion to look forward with specific plans for the future. Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, who was the guest of honour, said the changing times made it imperative on the part of the trade unions and the management to work in a responsible manner. To be successful, any company would have to be sensitive to the demands of the market, he said.

Reji Philip, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Hindustan Paper Corporation, in his address, said the company was seriously taking up the issue of a product specific special economic zone for the HNL. This would help the company focus on producing value-added paper products, he said and added that HNL was closely pursuing the proposal for producing currency note printing paper which was now imported.

P.K. Harikumar, Vaikom municipal chairman; R. Chandrasekharan, HPCEA; K. Babu and K. Ajith, MLAs, spoke on the occasion. N.P. Prabhu, Managing Director, HNL, welcomed the gathering.
