Takes charge

KOLLAM: Deputy Chief Engineer of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Kollam Circle, T.K. Yohan has taken charge as the director of the KSEB Management Information System and State Public Information Officer. Mr. Yohan can be contacted at 9446527626. K. Free education

KOLLAM: The Panmana Ashramam will provide free education to 25 students hailing from economically weak families. The financial aid will be provided irrespective of caste or creed up to the professional course. Corporation decides to pay KSEB dues

THRISSUR: Thrissur Corporation on Monday decided to pay Rs.25 crore in dues to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). The Corporation had accumulated Rs.38.15 crore in dues between 1998 and 2002. Non-repayment of dues had caused a rift between the Corporation and KSEB. Payment of Rs.25 crore constituted a one-time-settlement plan drawn up after talks between Mayor R. Bindu and the KSEB officials. Thrissur Corporation is the only municipal body in the State which supplies electricity through its own network. — Staff Reporter

Horticultural show from today

THRISSUR: A horticultural show organised by the Thrissur Agri-Horticultural Society will begin here on Wednesday. This was announced by District Collector M. Beena at a press conference here on Tuesday. The show will be held on the premises of the Town Hall. The Thrissur Corporation had denied permission to hold the show at the Thekkinkad Maidan, and this had triggered a controversy. — Staff Reporter

Two injured in road accident

THRISSUR: Two brothers were injured, one of them seriously, when the bike they were riding collided with a tipper lorry at Manakkalapadi, near Irinjalakuda, on Tuesday. Jomon, 21, and Joji, 16, sons of Jose of Vattamkonathu House, were admitted to a private hospital here. The incident occurred at 9.30 a.m., the police said. — Staff Reporter

Gold missing from temple

THRISSUR: Nine sovereigns of gold was reported missing from Puthenchira Vaimelikkavu Devi Temple at Mala on Tuesday. Gold ornaments, including a `golaka' (gold covering for the idol), were missing from the sanctum sanctorum since 6 a.m. on Tuesday, the police said. A door leading to the sanctum sanctorum was found open. Sniffer dogs were pressed into service. Forensic experts examined the place. A few employees of the temple were being interrogated, the police added. — Staff Reporter

Hilal case hearing

MALAPPURAM: The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here on Tuesday put off to Thursday the hearing on a petition filed by Crime Branch to revoke the bail granted to Hilal Mohammed, who has been facing trial in a cheating case. — Staff Reporter

Trains to stop

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The following trains will stop for one minute on March 1 and 2 at the Chirayinkil station, in connection with the `Kaliyoottu festival' at Sree Sarkara Devi temple, Chirayinkil. The trains are, Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam Intercity Expresses (6341/6342) and Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalore-Thiruvananthapuram Parasuram Express (6349/6350). — Staff Reporter

Power theft

Thiruvananthapuram: The anti-power theft squad of the Electricity Board detected power theft and other irregularities to the tune of Rs.1.31 crore during inspections conducted by it in different parts of the State during the last one month.

Water level down

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The water level of major reservoirs of the State has decreased. According to the figures released by the Central Water Commission for the week ending February 26, at Idukki the water level decreased from 2,362.78 ft., to 2,360.04 ft., at Idamalayar from 505.71ft., to 500.03 ft., and at Kallada from 356.04 ft., to 351.05 ft.
