PAYYANNUR: BPCL Kochi Refineries was too talented for Karnataka Police as it won 25-19, 25-20, 25-17 to post its third consecutive win in the men's section of the National volleyball league (Group II) here on Tuesday night. The win improved the team's chances of qualifying for the Super League to be held at its home ground from March 7. It took the defending champion just 49 minutes to dismiss the challenge from the policemen.
Impressive show
It was quite an impressive show since it had rested some of its key players, including main setter B. Anil and R. Rajeev. Even skipper E.K. Kisore Kumar was only sparingly used. But the replacements rose to the occasion, and there was of course the towering presence of Tom Joseph, who smashed at will. T. Azeez and Vibib M. George too spiked with a lot of conviction and combined well at the net to frustrate the Bangalore team. H.P. Girish did come up with some telling smashes for Karnataka Police now and then, and there were also whole-hearted efforts from Ramesh Kanvi and H. Kumar. But it was a forgettable outing for the policemen. In the late night matches on Monday in the men's section, Cochin Port Trust beat ICF (Chennai) 25-15, 25-14, 23-25, 25-18 while Indian Bank defeated Karnataka Police 25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14.
