ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday directed Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited and police to take immediate action in cases of power theft across the State, file applications before the concerned courts for investigation and ensure arrests of accused persons.
Compliance
A two-judge Bench comprising Justice Amar Saran and Justice R N Mishra, while fixing March 19 as the next date of hearing also asked for a compliance report by then failing which, the court warned, it would have to summon the managing director of UPPCL and the DIG (public grievances), DGP headquarters. The court, which was hearing a bunch of writ petitions filed by various people against whom FIRs have been lodged in connection with power theft, also asked the MD of UPPCL to furnish details of the loss of revenue resulting from theft and non-payment of bills.
Displeasure
The court expressed displeasure over the fact that despite an earlier order dated September nine, 2006, whereby it was observed that though not a cognisable offence, power theft should be considered as a social crime, the Government and the officials concerned have shown lack of seriousness to check the menace.- PTI
