DINDIGUL: A new swimming pool, constructed at a cost of Rs.50 lakh, at the District Sports Complex near the Collectorate would be thrown open for public use from March first week. The 25-metre-long and 13-metre-wide pool has six lanes with diving board facility. Water purification equipment and suction motors and other equipment and tools have been provided for its maintenance. Separate toilet facilities, bathrooms and dressing rooms will be available for men and women. A spacious room has been earmarked for the swimming coach. Four lifeguards would be deputed to man the pool. The approach road from the entrance to the pool and parking facilities are ready. The Municipality has supplied the required quantum of water to fill the pool. A deep open well near the pool inside the district sports complex is the major water source to the pool and for watering the grass on the football ground. The district unit of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu plans to collect an entry fee of Rs.20 per head for an hour irrespective of gender and age. The tentative working hours of the pool would be 6 a.m. to 12 noon and 3 p.m to 7 p.m. The officials have decided to allot 11 a.m. and 12 noon sessions exclusively for women.
Other plans
The District Sports Office has several plans to beautify the massive open space around the pool to attract more people. A lawn would be established on the open space near the pool and shade-giving trees planted at the pool entrance to make it greener. The pool has been constructed as per the designs and guidelines of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. It will be uniform in all district headquarters, said officials at the District Sports Office. The pool was formally inaugurated by M.K. Stalin, Minister for Rural Development at a function held at Palani on Monday.
