Staff Correspondent

`Study centres should help integrate them into mainstream'

  • District has a population of over four lakh
  • Nearly 80 per cent of the community is living in poverty

CHITRADURGA: Study centres should be practical oriented and the research findings should be used for the welfare of communities, said B.A. Vivek Rai, Vice-Chancellor, Kannada University.

He was presiding over a seminar on "Karnataka Beda (Valmiki) Community-history and culture" organised jointly by the Valmiki Adhyayana Peetha of the university and the local Valmiki Sahitya Sampada here on Tuesday.

The centres should help bring the deprived community into mainstream society, he said.

He said that communities like the Valmiki community have not been given their due place in society.

They have less representation in various sectors of the society including politics.

    H. Tippareddy, MLA, said the Valmiki community was gradually becoming more aware of their rights, urging the Government to meet their demands. He said the district has a population of over four lakh, which was still deprived of a level playing field and deserving opportunities. Nearly 80 per cent of the community was living in poverty. A lot needs to be done for the welfare of the community, said Mr. Tippareddy.

Writer and retired professor of the university Lakshaman Telgavi delivered lectures on the history and culture of the community. Several writers and experts would attend the two-day seminar. They will highlight the status of the community and steps needed for its welfare
