No more garlanding of statues in State

R.K. Radhakrishnan

CHENNAI: From now on, paying tributes at statues of leaders and cultural icons will be different: showering a few petals on a photo of the leader kept at the base of the statue.

According to a Government Order issued by the Tamil Development, Trusts and Information (Exhibition) department, dated February 13, the practice is being followed for long in New Delhi.

Officials explained it was the best practice for two reasons: one, the statue is not damaged during the exercise of putting up a platform for garlanding the leader; secondly, no disrespect is shown to the departed leader.

"Till now, for all anniversaries, a platform was erected up to the waist or the chest of the statue to enable people to garland it. This is not right," said an official.

In Chennai, 20 functions will be organised by the Government over the next year to honour leaders, including B.R. Ambedkar, Rajaji, Bharatiyar, M.G. Ramachandran, Mahatma Gandhi, Kamarajar, Periyar, C.N. Annadurai and Jawaharlal Nehru.
