Karunanidhi's village will be on the rail map soon

CHENNAI: Tirukuvalai, the native village of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, will soon be on the rail map. In the railway budget submitted in Parliament on Monday, the Railway Ministry sanctioned extension of the Tiruchi-Thanjavur-Nagore conversion project to Tiruthuraipundi via Velankanni, (a Christian pilgrimage town) and Tirukuvalai by laying a new line.

Sharing of cost

Church authorities have agreed to share the cost of laying the new BG line from Nagore to Velankanni. Now the railways have decided to extend the line to Tiruthuraipundi to provide rail link to Tirukuvalai.

The Ministry also extended the electrification of the Villupuram-Tiruchi project to Madurai.

Work is in progress between Villupuram and Tiruchi (178 route km) at a cost of Rs 87.81 crore and is scheduled to be completed by December.

The extension of the project to Madurai would involve electrification of another 154 route km.

The project cost is Rs 86 crore and a token amount of Rs 25 lakh has been sanctioned in the budget.

Electrification

As a material modification, electrification of the Ernakulam-Trivandrum project, completed recently, will be extended to Kanyakumari via Nagercoil.

The work on these two new projects will be taken up in the next financial year.

A railway official said with the price of crude oil increasing in the international market, the Planning Commission had asked the Railway Ministry to take up electrification of more lines to reduce diesel consumption.

40 bridges

The Ministry also sanctioned 40 new road over bridges/under bridges for Tamil Nadu in the budget, each costing Rs. 12 crore, which includes the State Government contribution.
