HYDERABAD: Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Tuesday asked the Government to develop century-old Mahbubia Government Girls High School in Gunfoundry as a model institution in the city.

Participating as a chief guest in the school's centenary celebrations, Mr. Thakur asked School Education Minister N. Rajyalakshmi and Information and Public Relations Minister Mohammed Ali Shabbir, who were present on the occasion, to conduct a meeting with officials within a month and chalk out an action plan for the development of the school.

He earlier laid a foundation stone for the centenary block, which is being constructed with a cost of Rs. 45 lakhs. A new computer lab will also be provided in the same building. A memorandum of understanding was reached with Lions Club to ensure better facilities in the school.

The school was established in February 1907 for "purdah girls". Originally, it was named as New Zenana School with only four girls. The name was later changed to Mahbubia when the then Nizam Mir Mahbub Ali consented that it bear his name. Initially, the school was located near Nampally railway station.

Ms. Rajyalakshmi and Mr. Ali Shabbir also assured to extend cooperation in completing all the developmental works within a year. School children later enthralled the audience with cultural programmes.

Hyderabad Collector R. V. Chandravadan, Educational Officer B. Mallamma and Celebrations Committee president Begum Bilkees Latif were among those who were present.
