CHENNAI
: A fire swept through the department store `Mummy Daddy' on Kilpauk Garden Road causing extensive damage on Tuesday.
Fire service officers said that following a call received at around 11.30 a.m., four tenders from Kilpauk, Egmore and Vepery fire stations were rushed to the spot, along with four Metrowater tankers. The fire was put out in about 30 minutes, they added.
The shopping centre had a roadside fast food facility, provision store outlet and bakery products.
Investigations suggested that the accident may have been caused by an oven burst in the kitchen.
The loss had to be assessed, but there was no casualty, the officials said. Deputy Director Fire Services V Madurapandian, Divisional Fire Officers V Vijayakumar (south) and Meenakshi Vijaykumar (north) supervised the operation.
Provisions and other consumables were destroyed in the fire, officials said.
