Congress criticised for attacks on media

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : Putting up a united front and criticising the Congress for attacks against the media, parliamentary party leaders of the Telugu Desam Party, the Samajwadi Party, the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Asom Gana Parishad staged a protest outside Parliament House.

Demanding that Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pull up the Andhra Pradesh and Assam Governments, the leaders cited instances of attacks on the media, particularly the Eenadu group and the North East Television of Assam as cases in point.

Legislature misled

They said the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Government in Andhra Pradesh had promulgated an ordinance to intimidate and harass the media and charged that the Chief Minister had misled the legislature on the issue.

Referring to Assam, they said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had launched a public attack against NE Television and its Managing Director Manoranjana Singh following a report about alleged nexus between the Government and extremist outfits.

"It is high time that all those who have a stake in the freedom of the press and the need for upholding the values of democracy to raise their voice against misrule of Congress in Andhra Pradesh and Assam," a joint statement said.

K. Yerrannaidu (TDP), Amar Singh (SP), P.G. Narayanan (AIADMK), Sarbananda Sonowal (AGP) and R. Chandrasekhar Reddy (TDP) were signatories to the statement.
