Promote national unity through media: Governor

Shorab Modi awards presented

CHENNAI : National integration should be promoted using mass media such as art, drama, dance, music, film and television, said Governor Surjit Singh Barnala.

He was speaking at the Sohrab Modi Institutional Awards function held at the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.

The award went to the students of Sri Bhagvan Mahaveer Jain College in Bangalore for the `excellent service rendered for national integration and development of arts'. College principal N. Sundararajan received the award on behalf of the students.

``We have stood united during crises. Art and literature made tremendous contributions to the

freedom movement by igniting the minds of youth and bringing them together to join the movement'', Mr. Barnala said. Classical dance and drama, music and poems, have helped in promoting patriotism, unity, harmony and brotherhood in India right from ancient days. He recalled the legendary Parsi stage actor Sohrab Modi's contribution to theatre and cinema. "I have seen Sohrab Modi. His voice was attractive. Everybody would stay on to listen to him. Modi's contribution to film and drama and to the promotion of national integration and development of the arts is laudable. His contribution to social issues such as women's empowerment and efforts against alcoholism were instrumental in bringing about a social change in society."

He congratulated Shahzada Parveez, director of the Sohrab Modi Awards Function, for promoting peace, unity and brotherhood. "Crossing of a milestone is an achievement and that too, by creative writing and direction of about 7,000 plays in 19 languages is commendable," he said.

Mr. Barnala also released an anthology of poems, `Mitti ki Palkhen,' authored by Gyan Chand `Marmagya'. Mr. Barnala also gave away the `Best Talent Award' to 22 students from the Bangalore college, who also staged a Hindi play.
