Vachathi case: CBI explanation sought

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the State police to explain as to why trial in the Vachathi violence case has not been completed even after 11 years.

A Division Bench comprising Justices S.J. Mukhopadhaya and R. Sudhakar posed the query when a public interest litigation petition, seeking constitution of a Special Court and appointment of a Special Public Prosecutor, pending since 2002, came up for hearing on Tuesday.

Case status

Rejecting the submission that the matter had become infructuous, as the Government had met the demand, the Judges sought to know the status of the case, pending before the I Additional District and Sessions Judge of Dharmapuri at Krishnagiri.

Assistant Solicitor-General P. Wilson informed the Bench on Tuesday that pursuant to the orders of the High Court, K. Jayabalan was appointed the Central Bureau of Investigation's prosecutor and the trial was on.

Charge sheet

filed in 1996

The charge sheet was filed on April 23, 1996, and the trial transferred to Krishnagiri on October 16, 1996.

Vachathi, a 200-house tribal hamlet in Dharmapuri district, shot to limelight after an attack, allegedly by Forest and police personnel for three days from June 20, 1992.

The case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation on February 24, 1995.
