Tourism seminar on emerging opportunities

Government taking steps to boost infrastructure: Minister

CHENNAI : When experts spoke on emerging opportunities in the tourism industry at M.O.P. Vaishnav College on Saturday, it was evident that the industry had travelled a good distance from just visits to conventional tourist spots in the city.

Organised by the School of Business and Entrepreneurship Development Cell of the college, the seminar on the theme `New generation entrepreneurs and tourism' was aimed at exploring new avenues in the tourism industry. Students would later present papers on a business idea to promote tourism.

Inaugurating the seminar, Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan said the government was taking steps to improve tourist infrastructure in the State. He commended the college for the initiative.

The seminar was marked by presentations on tourism related with religion, entertainment, heritage, culture, medicine, education and role of hotel industry in promoting the same.

Fr. Jagath Gaspar Raj, managing director of Goodwill Communications, spoke on opportunities in religious tourism.

He said India's strength was in its diversity.

"Our cultural life should be built around places of worship so that we can showcase our traditional arts and culture, along with religion," he said.

Among other speakers for the day were managing director of Abirami theatres `Abirami' Ramanthan, general manager, marketing of Apollo Hospitals Karthik Rajagopal and principal of the college K. Nirmala Prasad, who spoke on `Educational Tourism'.

Dean of the Student Training Cell Rosy Fernando said they were planning an intensive campaign to promote Chennai an attractive tourist destination.
