Rehabilitation of fisherfolk from March

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government has worked out a project to rehabilitate all fishermen families in the coastal areas of the State, Fisheries Minister S. Sarma announced here on Tuesday.

He was speaking after distributing financial assistance sanctioned by the Government for the fishermen who lost their houses in the fire at Anchuthengu.

The rehabilitation project would be implemented over a period of two years, Mr. Sarma said.

The construction of new houses at Anchuthengu would begin in March. A people's committee would be set up to supervise the work. The District Collector would be the convenor of the panel. The MLA, the panchayat president and representatives of political parties would be members of the committee. The houses would be completed in four months, Mr. Sarma said.

Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran distributed fishing equipment to the fishermen who lost their gear in the fire. District Collector N. Ayyappan stressed the need to bring the fishermen families into the mainstream. MLA Anathalavattam Anandan presided. At a separate function, Mr. Sarma said the housing scheme to rehabilitate 120 fishermen at Cheriyathura would be completed before May 30. He was speaking after laying the stone for the new houses.
