Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHRA) has decided to take up with the State Human Rights Commission the `hardship' that tourists in the beach resort of Kovalam were put to during the February 24 drive by the revenue authorities against encroachments. The early morning drive carried out during the tourist season and without prior notice had put hundreds of tourists who were holidaying in Kovalam to hardship, KHRA general secretary G. Sudhiesh Kumar and South Kerala Hoteliers' Forum secretary Rajagopal Iyer said at a press conference here on Tuesday. Mr. Kumar said the association and the forum were against illegal construction and encroachments, but the drive was carried out without following procedures. "Many had appealed against the order of the Revenue Divisional Officer. But they were not intimated whether the appeal was rejected." Mr. Iyer said the authorities should have avoided the peak tourist season to carry out the drive. They should ensure that the drive was carried out either before or after the peak tourist season, he said.
