Demolition drive

NEW DELHI: More than three-dozen illegal shops and sheds besides unauthorised extensions in various properties were removed from INA Market during an anti-encroachment drive in the Capital on Tuesday. The drive, carried out in the presence of police personnel, went off peacefully.

The joint operation was carried out by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Land & Development Office after instructions from the Delhi High Court-appointed Monitoring Committee.

Teachers' protest continues

NEW DELHI: For the second day in a row, a large number of All-India Primary Teachers' Federation members took part in a rally here on Tuesday protesting against certain provisions of the Right to Education Bill, 2005-06.

A number of teachers courted arrest at Parliament Street demanding modifications in the Bill and fulfilment of other demands like removal of clauses pertaining to school management committee, improvement in learning conditions in schools, stoppage of recruitment of para-teachers and implementation of common school system.

Thirteen arrested

NEW DELHI: Thirteen people allegedly involved in separate cases of robbery and auto-theft have been arrested from South Delhi in the past four days. Seven stolen vehicles, jewellery, 48 gm of narcotic substance and over Rs. 1 lakh in cash have been seized from them, the police said.

SFI march

NEW DELHI: The Students' Federation of India took out a pre-Budget march from Mandi House to Parliament Street here demanding that the Government spend 6 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product on education.

Carrying placards, a number of students from Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University took part in the march.

Jhuggis gutted

NEW DELHI: Over 150 jhuggis were gutted in a fire that broke out at JJ Colony in Bawana here on Tuesday. One man was injured.

According to the Fire Service Department, the fire broke out at 3-10 a.m. and 17 fire tenders took over an hour to put out the blaze. Javed (21) sustained minor burn injuries. The police said the fire could have been caused by an electric short circuit.

Two arrested

NEW DELHI: Two persons, including a former ICICI Bank employee, have been arrested in Chankayapuri here for allegedly cheating people by using their credit cards.

According to the police, the accused, Wilson Lal and Lalit Prasad, would lure people with the promise of increasing their credit card limit and then cheat them. They would take away the credit card from the customer posing as bank employees and use it for shopping. The two were arrested on a complaint by Ravinder Kumar.
