Budget hailed

ERODE: The president of Erode Handloom Cloth Merchants Association, R. S. Nataraja Mudaliar, and others on Wednesday thanked the Union Finance Minister for reducing tax on petrol and diesel and abolition of tax on bio-diesel. He also thanked the Finance Minister for raising the Income Tax exemption limit to Rs 1.10 lakh and urged the Union Government to raise the exemption level to Rs. 2 lakh for senior citizens.

Killed in accident

ATTUR: A farmer was killed and two others sustained injuries when a lorry lost control and dashed against a roadside tree here on Wednesday. Police said the lorry was proceeding to Attur from Talavasal, when the accident took place. Rajendran (50) died on the spot, while the lorry driver and cleaner sustained injuries and were admitted to the Government Hospital here.

OMALUR: Collector N. Mathivanan distributed welfare assistance worth Rs. 6 lakh to 60 beneficiaries under various schemes here recently, a press release said.

Fishing boycott continues

NAGAPATTINAM: For the second consecutive day on Wednesday fishermen of about eight coastal villages in the district continued their boycott and did not venture into the sea for fishing in protest against the attack on fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. They were agitated over the attack on fishermen off Rameswaram in the early hours of Wednesday. They urged the Government to take urgent steps to stop firing at fisherfolk by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Multimedia expo

PERAMBALUR: A 10-day multimedia exhibition will commence near the new bus stand here on March 11. Exhibits and video films explaining the achievements of various schemes executed in the district and cultural programmes will form part of the exhibition. Products made by self-help groups will be marketed at special stalls. Competition on `kolam', healthy baby contest, and a dog show would be held on March 12, 14 and 17 respectively. Prizes awarded

PUDUKOTTAI: The Department of Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) bagged the first prize in the multimedia exhibition concluded here on Tuesday. The second and third prizes went to the Education and Agriculture Department respectively. The Tamil Nadu Adi-Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation got a consolation prize.

Schemes reviewed

PERAMBALUR: The Zonal Commissioner for Perambalur district, along with the State Education Secretary, M. Kutralingam, reviewed the schemes being implemented by various departments and agencies in the district, on Wednesday. He said that 30,000 persons had benefited through the free health camps conducted so far at 19 centres. He urged the officials to ensure expeditious completion of works on construction of hostels.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 81.72 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 613 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Bank performance

Tuticorin: The 75th District Consultative Committee meeting organised by the Lead Bank (State Bank of India) here on Wednesday took stock of performance of banks during the current fiscal till January 31 regarding disbursal of loans under various schemes.

Collector R. Palaniyandi, who chaired the meeting, asked the banks to expedite the processing of loan applications under the Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana.

"A total of 113 applications were pending with various banks in this regard," he added.

Under Swarnajayanthi Grama Swarozgar Yojana, revolving fund was released to 361 beneficiaries and economic assistance to 12 persons, all during the first ten months of the current fiscal.

Seven child

labourers rescued

Tuticorin: The National Child Labour Project officials rescued seven child labourers at Kovilpatti near here on Wednesday.

The team found M. Karuppasamy (13), P. Mariappan (13), D. Bose (12), S. Manikandan (13), S. Perumal (13), N. Murugan (12) and P. Karuppasamy (13), working at textile, grocery and jewellery outlets. - Staff Reporter

Mudumalai sanctuary closed

Udhagamandalam: Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park near here will remain closed from March 1.

Wildlife Warden, the Nilgiris, Rakesh Kumar Dogra, told reporters here on Wednesday that the prolonged dry spell has made different parts of the sanctuary vulnerable to bush fire.

Despite efforts to contain them, fresh fires were breaking out, posing a major challenge to officials. So far 19 fires had broken out in this season, affecting 620 hectares.

While 11 elephants would remain at the Theppakadu elephant camp, the remaining 11 would be shifted to Bambax, where there was adequate water. During the closure period, work on sprucing up the guesthouses would be expedited.

Indira Gandhi sanctuary closed

POLLACHI: In the wake of prevailing dry conditions in forests, the 958-sq km Indira Gandhi Wildlife sanctuary and National Park in Pollachi will remain closed from Thursday.

Wildlife warden K.R. Varadharajan said the decision was in view of the danger of forest fire and to protect the wildlife habitat. Top Slip was facing severe water shortage. — Staff Reporter

Counselling for teachers' recruitment

MADURAI: Counselling for issuing appointment orders to postgraduate teachers selected through the Teachers' Recruitment Board will be held at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Ashok Nagar, Chennai, on March 3 and 4.

A total of 1,789 candidates have been selected by the TRB for recruitment in high and higher secondary schools. A press release from R. Pandurangan, Chief Educational Officer, here on Wednesday said the selected candidates should carry the original hall-ticket and selection intimation card.

MBA results published

MADURAI: Madurai Kamaraj University on Tuesday published results of the MBA semester examinations held in November 2006. Students can access the results at www.mkuniversity.org, www.webulagam.com and www.southindia.com, a release from S. Shanmugiah, Controller of Examinations, said.

Those who wish to apply for revaluation can download the application form from www.mkuniversity.org/forms/html and remit the prescribed fee with application at the office of the Controller of Examinations on or before March 9. They need not wait for the mark statement. — Staff Reporter
