MPTC polls today

Sangareddy: Medak district Collector B. Venkatesam in a press release here said that elections for the Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies in Babilgaon of Sadasivapet, Nizampet of Ramayampet and Kanchanpalli of Kowdipalli mandals will be held on Thursday. All the schools in the vicinity of the polling booths will remain closed on the day of polling and counting. — Staff Reporter

Sangareddy: The Kula Vivavksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham's (KVPS) Medak district committee organised a victory rally here on Wednesday following the positive response from the State Government to the demands put forth by it. Heavy turnout for dental, eye camp

Sangareddy: A total of 397 students from Tribal Boys Hostel, studying in 14 different schools of Zaheerabad, attended the dental and eye camp organised by the Mahindra and Mahindra unit in Zaheerabad on Wednesday. The event was conducted in association with SB Dental College & Hospitals, Bidar, Smile Dental Care and Megur Eye Care Center, Zaheerabad.

Sangareddy: Medak Joint Collector Vani Mohan addressing a training programme on Council elections for Sangareddy division Mandal Revenue Officers, presiding Mandal Development Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers wanted them to discharge their duties impartially. Grading to be given to 102 hostels

KURNOOL: Collector M. Dana Kishore asked the social welfare officials to give grading to 102 hostels in the district according to the infrastructure available. At a review meeting here on Wednesday, he said hostel officials should concentrate on education and diet. He instructed the officials to fill the vacancies of cooks and helpers with temporary workers. Also, security guards were sanctioned for 26 girls hostels.

The hostel authorities brought to the notice of the Collector the shortage of cooking gas. Mr. Kishore mooted a proposal for a science fair for hostel students. - Special Correspondent

`Routine in nature'

KADAPA: The Union Budget is routine in nature with nominal outlays and no bold decisions for rural development, employment generation, agriculture and poverty alleviation, CPI district secretary G. Obulesu remarked on Wednesday. Salaried classes did not accrue any benefit and price of beedis smoked by poorer sections was hiked, he said. A. whopping defence outlay of 96,000 crores was necessitated by improper foreign relations with neighbours, he alleged and said a part of it could have been diverted to productive sectors. - Staff Reporter

`Urban-oriented'

KURNOOL: CPI(M) district secretary T. Shadrak described the Union Budget as urban-oriented. He said the budget failed to provide a comprehensive programme for development of rural India. According to him, allocations to rural areas and poverty alleviation programmes were inadequate considering the magnitude of the problem. Rural areas were neglected for nearly two decades. He said the Public Distribution System needed support in the wake of rising prices. - Special Correspondent

10 p.c. interest for senior citizens

Madanapalle: Online banking and ATM facility were provided since October, said G. Sivaram, Manager of Syndicate Bank, while presiding over a customers' meet held here on Tuesday. Staff member Malleswara Rao said 10 per cent interest will be paid till March 31 to senior citizens on three-year fixed deposits. - Correspondent

Notification for Council poll issued

HYDERABAD: The Governor on Wednesday notified the election for 31 members in the State Legislative Council to be elected by MLAs.

Following this notification, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued the election schedule, according to which, the polling will be held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on March 22. Counting of votes will be taken up at 5 p.m. the same day.

YSR concern for Congress worker

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Wednesday enquired about the health of Congress worker Kondari Ramaiah, who was allegedly attacked by TDP workers at Rupanagunda village in Nakkarikallu mandal in Guntur district.

Dr. Reddy spoke to Vara Prasad, neuro surgeon, at Guntur Government Hospital to enquire about the condition of Mr. Ramaiah.. — Special Correspondent

Train halt

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway has provided a halt for one minute at Rangapuram station on Nandyal-Dhone section for train number 406 Guntur-Secunderabad passenger from Wednesday. The train will arrive Rangapuram at 1.34 a.m. and depart at 1.35 a.m., according to an SCR press release here. — Special Correspondent

4 killed as bus hits autorickshaw

ANANTAPUR: Four persons were killed and another four injured seriously when an autorickshaw and a private bus collided head on near Aravakuru village of Kuderu mandal in the district late on Tuesday night. The injured were admitted to the General Hospital here.

More power from Kaiga

HYDERABAD: The State is likely to get more power from Kaiga Atomic Power Plant in Karnataka following its 220-MW capacity third unit achieving critical stage on Monday. The plant will earmark 117 MW out of 220 MW for Andhra Pradesh. The State is poised to get nearly 2.6 million units daily. The Kaiga power will be priced at nearly Rs. 6 per unit. .— Special Correspondent

Plea for price cut

HYDERABAD: AP Ryotu Sangham has demanded reduction in the sale price of Bt cotton Bollgard 1 and 2 seed to Rs. 650 and Rs. 750 a packet respectively.

In a statement, Sangham leader Kolli Nageswara Rao said the Government's approval for Rs. 750 and Rs. 925 for Bollgard I and II seed respectively for this year was unfair. — Special Correspondent

Selected for award

HYDERABAD: A. S. Raghavendra, Dean, School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad, has been selected for the prestigious J. C. Bose National Fellowship, instituted by the Central Government's Department of Science and Technology. Prof. Raghavendra has also been chosen for Dr. K. Ramaiah Memorial Award of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, for his contribution to research on crop improvement, according to a press release. — Special Correspondent

Two die in suicide pact

HINDUPUR: Family disputes allegedly led to a suicide pact by a woman and her two sons here on Wednesday. While the sons died in the hospital, their mother was saved by doctors. According to the police, Saraswathi (58), Srinivas (40) and Kirankumar (36), owners of a function hall and suppliers, consumed a poison in the early hours and raised an alarm unable to bear the burning sensation. — Staff Reporter
