`Cauvery tribunal verdict is flawed'

BANGALORE: Protests against the Cauvery Tribunal final award continue. The former president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat G.S. Siddalingiah, writer M. Chidananda Murthy, the former MLC M. Krishnappa, the Samajwadi Party State leader B.S. Paramashivaiah and M.N. Subba Rao, secretary of the Vijayanagar Taxpayers' Association, said that the tribunal had allowed Karnataka to irrigate 18.85 lakh acres, but not apportioned water required for it.

In a press release, they said that the 270 tmcft of water was sufficient only for 11.24 lakh acres, but not the remaining 7.61 lakh acres. Out of the 802 km, the river flows through 381 km in Karnataka and 357 km in Tamil Nadu. The two States contributed 53.8 per cent and 31.9 per cent of the total water respectively.

But they had been apportioned 33 per cent and 53 per cent of water respectively, which was a "gross injustice", they added.
