Expert: State can plan a multi-purpose project

Bangalore: The State Government could take up a multi-purpose project to generate power and supply drinking water to Bangalore by constructing a 60 tmcft capacity terminal reservoir at Mekedatu on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border.

This was stated by the former Chief Engineer (Irrigation) R. Hrisheekesh here on Wednesday.

He was delivering a lecture on the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal final award, organised by the Mythic Society.

Mr. Hrisheekesh, who assisted the State counsel before the tribunal, said that the Government could regulate water in the Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini reservoirs situated near the inter-State border through the terminal reservoir. The former Chief Engineer said that the award was unimplementable and it would be difficult to adhere to the tribunal order to release 137 tmcft between June and September to Tamil Nadu. Asked by a member in the gathering as to what would have been reasonable to Karnataka, he said that any apportionment in the range of 300 to 310 tmcft would have been reasonable.

Citing the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal final award, he said that Karnataka's plea was upheld when its share was increased by five more tmcft in 1976 by reducing Maharashtra's share to that extent. Instead of approaching the Supreme Court, he said that Karnataka should file a review petition before the Tribunal.
