Plan to get funds for 75 projects

BANGALORE: Just as the allocation for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has been increased by 10 per cent in the Union Budget presented on Wednesday, the State Government is preparing to submit proposals to secure funding for over 75 projects in Bangalore and Mysore, to be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 9,495 crore during 2007-2008.

The Union Government has increased the allocation for JNNURM by enhancing the allocation from Rs. 4,595 crore in this fiscal to Rs. 4,987 crore in 2007-2008. Under JNNURM, the Union Government funds 35 per cent of the project cost in Category A city (Bangalore) and 80 per cent in Category C city (Mysore).

Sources in the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), the nodal agency for JNNURM in the State, said that projects, including water sanitation, underground drainage, roads, flyovers, underpasses, grade separators and slum upgradation and conservation efforts in Mysore, would be taken up during the next fiscal. "Nearly 40 heritage structures have been identified for which the Heritage Department is finalising detailed project reports," the sources added.

Of the 538 projects estimated at Rs. 23,950 crore approved by the Union Ministry for Urban Development during 2006-2007, 16 projects from the State have been approved amounting to Rs. 1,422 crore. Though 23 project proposals had been sent to the Union Government, seven project proposals have been withheld for various reasons.

The sources said that the Union Government has not rejected any of the projects from the State. The State is the third largest beneficiary of JNNURM after Maharashtra and West Bengal, and the largest among the beneficiary States in the South. The sources said that compared to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, it had done well to secure approvals for the projects.
