BANGALORE: Indian cricket team captain Rahul Dravid donned a different role in the city recently. He was at a platform arranged by a construction firm, trying to decipher the intricacies involved in handling teams and nurturing talent.

Taking the context of Indian cricket, Dravid said: "The best way to lead a team is to evolve a consensus in the team on critical parameters. While arriving at the `non-negotiables' in a team, it is important to ensure that each member in the team subscribes to the view, instead of merely imposing rules on the team."

On team motivation, he said: "You do not need bigger motivation than playing for the country. Every player knows that he represents the aspirations of his country, State, city, friends and family. While this is enough to motivate a player to perform, it is also important to keep asking oneself, `where one stands in the history of the game'."

Sharing the platform with Dravid was Hema Ravichandar, strategic HR advisory and formerly, Head HR, Infosys.

She said: "Low motivational level is usually a consequence of either lack of competence or lack of commitment. To build a sense of motivation in a team, it is important to have a common / shared vision, which is clearly communicated."

On talent scarcity, she said India could use its population to its advantage.
