Chain snatchers are on the prowl again

BANGALORE: Motorcycle-borne men robbed two women of their gold chains estimated at Rs. 80,000 in Rajajinagar and Mahalakshmi Layout police station limits on Tuesday.

The police said that around 9 a.m., two men, who were riding a motorcycle, snatched a gold chain estimated at Rs. 50,000 from Kasturi Bai, a nurse, while she was walking in Rajajinagar IV Block.

In another case, around 12.30 p.m. two motorists snatched a chain estimated at Rs. 30,000 from Shellamma while she was walking near the Srinivasa Temple on 6th Main, Mahalakshmi Layout.

Counterfeit currency

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) staff have arrested an ex-serviceman and his accomplice on charges of printing and circulating counterfeit currency notes. The police had seized 1,600 counterfeit currency notes of Rs. 500 denomination, totalling to Rs. eight lakh, a car and two mobile phones from them.

The arrested were identified as Dorairaj (65), an ex-serviceman and a resident of Kavalbyarasandra and Babu (50) of Tannery Road. Shyam of Kerala is the kingpin of the racket. They printed the notes using computers and colour photocopying machines, the police said.

Posing as customers, the CCB staff approached the accused and arrested them. They demanded Rs. 4 lakh in exchange for counterfeit notes totalling Rs. eight lakh.

Murder solved

The Fraser Town police have solved the murder of Agnes (75), who was found dead with her throat slit on February 22, by arresting one of her acquaintances, Venkatesh alias James (32), a resident of Old Bayappanahalli and an office boy at a private firm on Davis Road.

The police said Venkatesh knew Agnes, who lived alone in a bungalow on Charles Campbell Road, for 15 years. Of late, he had been pestering her to allow him to live in the garage of the bungalow.

As Agnes rejected his request, he slit her throat with a kitchen knife, hoping that he could live in the bungalow after her death, the police said.

The bungalow belonged to the erstwhile Maharaja of Gundal. He had rented it out to Ramesh Mohanlal Shah. Agnes was working as a domestic help at Shah's house for five decades. After Shah and his son died, Agnes was living alone in the house, the police said.

DVDs seized

The CCB staff on Tuesday arrested Chandra (30), Rajappa (32) and Ramesh (19), all from Davangere district, and S. Rahul (20) of Tumkur district and seized from them 700 pirated DVDs, estimated at Rs. 1.40 lakh. The accused were allegedly selling the DVDs on the pavement at Katriguppe Circle in 3rd Stage, Banashankari.
