Bomb scare on hired buses of PSUs

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: An anonymous call that an RDX explosive was planted in Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses on hire to Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), Bharath Electronics Ltd. (BEL) and Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) sent the police and officials of the BMTC and the three public sector units into a tizzy on Wednesday afternoon.

The police, assisted by the Bomb Detection Squad and Dog Squad, searched several buses at the HAL bus yard, BEL premises in Jalahalli and ITI premises in Dooravaninagar. No explosives were found and the call turned out to be a hoax, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Bipin Gopalkrishna said.

BMTC Director (Security and Vigilance) P.S. Sandu told The Hindu that the BMTC Control Room received a call around 1.45 p.m. that there was a possibility of RDX explosive being planted in BMTC buses on hire to HAL, BEL and ITI. Immediately, BMTC officials alerted the police.

According to BMTC Managing Director Upendra Tripathy, the caller even mentioned the names of BMTC and police officers who could be contacted to avert an explosion.

The HAL police said the searches at the HAL bus yard caused anxiety to the employees, who were about to board the buses after the completion of their shift.
