Can multimedia tools be effectively used for teaching English literature? S. Josh, head of the Kannur University's Department of English Studies located on the Thalassery campus, is very optimistic about it. He hopes that his collection of photos and video clippings of landmark spots and structures he has taken during his recent visit to the United Kingdom to attend an international seminar can be utilised in English literature classrooms in the university. Dr. Josh, who is in charge of the PG Diploma course in Virtual Media being offered by the Department of English Studies, has just returned after attending a seminar organised by the Media Communication and Cultural Studies Association at the Coventry University in Birmingham, where he presented a paper on `Virtual media as an academic display.' During his two-week stay in the U.K. he visited Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Canterbury Cathedral, Dover Beach, Stratford-upon-Avon, Hyde Park, London Bridge, West Minister Abbey, House of Commons and the Globe theatre, among others, and took their snaps and video recordings. "In the classroom, I am planning to present to the students what I have seen there using multimedia tools," says Dr. Josh. He has also photographed and video graphed the Globe, set up by William Shakespeare in London where Shakespeare's plays are now performed only in summer season; the Swan theatre located on the bank of the river Avon and the house of the Bard there.
