Fair analysis

The editorial, `The effort does not match the rhetoric' (March 1) has covered every area of the budget. Sadly, an area in Mr. Chidambaram's proposals that should have received more attention is the domestic savings sector. It is hoped that the Minister will honour the sentiments of millions of salary-earners and ensure a better deal for them in the future.

S.R. Badrinarayan,
Chennai

The editorial presents a fair analysis of the budget. Adding to what it has said, I can only say that it is a big blow to the higher education sector that seriously needed a bigger share of the pie. At a time when our competitors in the knowledge expansion field are investing in a big way, there can't be anything worse than waiting for the budget every year in the hope of a higher share of GDP.

Arun Dash,
Hyderabad

You are right in your assessment of the budget being an exercise in rhetoric. It is a sad reflection of the constraints of coalition politics that the gap between shining India and struggling India is widening.

V. Krishnan,
Chennai

It is true that no single budget can satisfy all sectors but even so this year's exercise appears to be lacking in a realistic approach.

Yerrapragada Venkata Ramana,
Tirupati
