dated March 2, 1957: Madras goes to polls

Polling began on March 1 in the States of Madras and West Bengal in the second general elections. In Madras eight Parliamentary constituencies and 32 Assembly constituencies went to the polls to elect eight members to the Lok Sabha and 40 to the State Assembly. The number of voters in the area of Madras State where polling took place on March 1 is about 35 lakhs. There are 27 candidates for the eight Lok Sabha seats. Eight of them are Congressmen, three CRC nominees, two Communists, five PSP, a DMK candidate, and eight Independents. For the Assembly elections, the contestants number 160, consisting of 40 Congressmen, nine CRC candidates, seven Communists, 11 Praja Socialists, 25 DMK nominees and 68 Independents. In Bengal, polling took place in 17 Lok Sabha and 35 Assembly constituencies.
