dated March 2, 1957: Easy win for Krishnan

At quarter to three on March 1 at the Tennis Stadium in Madras, Mr. A.J. John, the Governor, unfurled the flags of Malaya and India and, after a brief speech, inaugurated the Davis Cup (Eastern Zone) matches between the two countries. It was a historic moment, for never before had a Davis Cup match been played in India. In the fitness of things the honour of holding the first match fell to Madras, the home of the National champion, R. Krishnan. India ended the day by securing a 2-0 lead, Krishnan defeating Ong Chew Bee 8-6, 6-1, 6-3 and Naresh Kumar accounting for Khong Kit Soon 6-2, 6-2, 6-0.
