Six special squads formed to check malpractices

EXAM TENSION: Students writing their higher secondary examinations in Puducherry on Thursday.

PUDUCHERRY: Plus-Two students of Government and private schools in Puducherry and Karaikal regions took their board examinations, which began on Thursday, and wrote the first language paper.

According to Director of School Education, G. Ragesh Chandra, a total of 8,351 students — 4,421 boys and 3,930 girls — in Puducherry, and 1,528 students - 678 boys and 852 girls - in Karaikal appeared for the examinations.

Examinations were being conducted in 23 centres in Puducherry and 13 in Karaikal.

He said that the department had formed six special squads in Puducherry and two in Karaikal to check any malpractices.

If any student was found to copy or indulge in any other malpractice, he or she could be debarred for five years. The examinations would be over by March 21. The practical examinations were conducted from February 10 to 20. The department had pressed 23 principals, 526 lecturers and 118 ministerial staff into service to conduct the examinations in a smooth manner. According to Joint Director, School Education, Ramadas, steps had been taken in Government schools to improve the performance of students.

Interaction sessions

"We had arranged interaction sessions with students, who had come first last year. Question banks had been prepared for most subjects and extra classes organised in weekends and during the half-yearly and quarterly holidays."

The passing mark of 40 for theory paper and 30 for practical has been revised in the new system, and only 30 marks are needed to pass the theory paper and 40 for the practical examiantions. As an added incentive, the Government had announced , Rs. one lakh grant for schools in suburban areas that get 95 per cent pass.

Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan had wished the students well for the examinations.
