Jammu:
As the 300-km-long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed on Thursday, the Air Force evacuated 800 passengers to the Kashmir Valley.
A total of 2,500 passengers have been airlifted from Jammu to Srinagar and vice-versa in IL-76 and AN-32 transport aircraft.
Some ailing people were among those airlifted.
"Operation Humsafar" was undertaken by the Army and the Air Force on the directive of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Army was assisting the civil administration in transporting stranded passengers to the Jammu and Srinagar airports.
The passengers were taken to the airports in State Road Transport Corporation buses free of cost, an official spokesman said, adding that senior Government officials were personally supervising the operation.
