Man held

ERODE: Kavindapady police arrested one more person in the case in which a couple was waylaid near Kavindapady. Some days ago Sivaprakash of Appakudal and his wife while going on a motorcycle along Kavindapady-Gobichettipalayam Road were waylaid by some persons in a car. When the culprits tried to rob the couple they raised an alarm. Villagers chased the criminals and helped in the arrest of one of them. The police arrested another culprit Selvam (27) of Erode. The police are searching for two more. - Staff Reporter

Silver jubilee celebrations

Tuticorin: The silver jubilee celebrations of TAC Nursery School was conducted here recently.

A.C. Muthiah, Chairman, SPIC Group of Companies, was the chief guest.

The Managing Director of Tuticorin Alkali and Chemicals, S. Chandramohan, was also present.

New collection centre

Tuticorin: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has opened a bill collection counter at the Customer Service Centre functioning at the Srivaikundam telephone exchange.

Official sources said that customers could make the payments at the centre between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on all working days.

The amount for new landline connections too would be accepted.

The BSNL has decided to extend all concessions offered to the customers whose telephones were disconnected owing to non-payment of dues till March 31. Accordingly, rent from the month of disconnection till the present would be waived for the customers who opted for a connection within the period. - Staff Reporter

Fishermen to resume fishing from today

Nagapattinam : Most of the fishermen belonging to eight coastal villages of Nagapattinam district who were on strike till Thursday to protest the attack on the fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy have decided to venture into the sea from Friday following talks with the panchayatdars of the respective coastal hamlets.

A leader of the fishermen association said the fishermen were hopeful that there would be no attack following the State Government's initiative to protect the fishermen.

For the third consecutive day on Thursday, fishermen of eight important coastal villages boycotted fishing. — Special Correspondent

Agriculture festival

KARAIKAL : The Agriculture Department of the Union Territory of Puducherry has organised a three-day `Agriculture Festival' at the municipal grounds in Karaikal from Friday to Sunday, according to Solai. Thiagarajan, Additional Director of Agriculture, Karaikal.

He said on Thursday that competitions would be conducted in making flower garlands, kitchen gardens, vegetable cultivation, etc. Special stalls would be put up to explain cultivation of all agricultural and other crops. — Special Correspondent

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam on Thursday stood at 81.61 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 671 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs. — Special Correspondent

IT officials conduct "survey"

CHENNAI: Income Tax department officials on Thursday conducted "survey" on the business premises of Tamil film producer K.V. Saravanan and director Saran.

The premises of a pharmaceutical company were also searched.

Official sources said the survey was to check the books of account. — Special Correspondent

Outboard engines, kerosene seized

RAMANATHAPURAM: Customs officials on Thursday seized two outboard engines and 100 litres of kerosene from Manankudi village near Pudumadam.

Acting on a tip-off, they searched beach areas and found the materials buried under sand. Superintendent of Police R. Thirugnanam visited Uchipuli near here and held discussions with police personnel about the seizure.

In the meanwhile, 12 refugees from Sri Lanka reached Rameswaram on Thursday. — Staff Reporter

Train rams into tractor

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Tenkasi-Madurai passenger train rammed into a tractor at an unmanned level crossing near Srivilliputtur on Thursday.

Railway police sources said the tractor driver failed to notice the train at the crossing between Srivilliputtur and Sivakasi. The engine was damaged and the train detained for nearly three hours.

The driver was admitted to a hospital in Madurai. — Staff Reporter

NABARD awards for bank branches

CHENNAI: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) on Wednesday organised a function to present State-level awards for best performance under self-help group (SHG) bank linkage programme in Tamil Nadu during 2005-06.

Among the more than 300 bank branches, State Bank of India secured the first prize by credit-linking 24,693 new SHGs, followed by Indian Bank and Indian Overseas Bank.

Pandyan Grama Bank secured the top honours among the banks with less than 300 and more than 100 branches with a credit linkage of 5,681 new SHGs. Among the banks with less than 100 branches, Pallavan Grama Bank won the first prize by credit-linking 1,757 new SHGs followed by Bank of India with 1,390 new SHGs.

Tiruchi District Central Co-operative Bank was adjudged the top bank among the district central co-operative banks in the State, followed by Villupuram DCCB and Salem DCCB.

Among the primary agricultural cooperative banks, Koothanallur PACB affiliated to Thanjavur DCCB secured the first prize, said a NABARD release. — Special Correspondent

Indian revises fare to Mumbai

CHENNAI: Indian has revised its fares to Mumbai from Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

A release said the unchecked or revised one-way fare on the Chennai-Mumbai or Bangalore-Mumbai or Hyderabad-Mumbai sector would be Rs. 1,575 inclusive of taxes and levies.

It is valid from March 1 to September 30.

Easy fare on the above sector had also been revised.
