Weightlifting
CHENNAI: The International Weightlifting Federation has brought India back into international competition and the country's first major agenda straightaway is the senior Asian championship to be held in China next month. The IWF had banned the country after three lifters were tested positive for banned drug and then later waived it in lieu of a fine of $50,000 to be paid by the federation. All this problem for the Federation came about after the country's lifters Edwin Raju and Tejinder Singh were tested positive for a banned steroid at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. This had come after two others Shailaja Pujari and B. Prameelavalli had returned positive tests in the pre-event doping tests conducted by WADA officials at the Patiala camp. The Indian Weightlifting Federation Secretary, Balbir Singh Bhatia said on Thursday that "we had paid 50 per cent of the fine amount with the assurance that the remaining will be paid in the next few months." The International Federation had accepted this and communicated to the Indian body to prepare for participating in the Asian Championship. Special Correspondent
