HYDERABAD: A sum of Rs.119 crores will be spent by September for providing drinking water in 37,000 Government and residential schools and hostels in the rural areas, according to Rural Development Minister D. Srinivas. He told reporters here on Thursday that of the 70,205 schools in the rural areas, drinking water was available in 34,516 schools. Pipelines would be laid from the nearest water tank wherever necessary, he said. Mr. Srinivas said under Indiramma scheme, water would be supplied to 9,343 schools at a cost of Rs. 28.03 crores. Water would be provided to 502 tribal educational institutions, 86 social welfare residential schools, 811 hostels and 387 BC welfare hostels. The Minister said a meeting of engineers of the Panchayat Raj Department would be held here on March 6 to prepare a plan on drinking water shortage in summer, which would be discussed at Collectors' conference on March 10. He said that five more districts were likely to be included in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP).
