National volleyball league final phase in Kochi

KOCHI: The BPCL Kochi Refinery will host the National Volleyball League's final phase at its indoor courts at Ambalamugal, near here, from March 7 to 11.

Six teams, the top two finishers of the three preliminary zones, in the men's section and four in women (winners of the three zones and a host entry) will figure in the five-day league event.

HSIDC (Haryana) and Indian Navy in the men`s section and Southern Railway women (Chennai) have made the grade from Group I which ended at Renukoot (U.P.) recently while the other two groups are in progress in Tuticorin (TN) and Payyannur (Kerala) .

Prize fund

The championship carries a total prize fund of Rs. 2.15 lakhs with the men's champion receiving Rs 50,000 and the women's winner Rs. 40,000.

Kochi Refinery Limited, now BPCL Kochi Refinery after its merger with Bharat Petroleum, and Kerala State Electricity Board won the men's and women's titles last year.

LNCPE posts win

LNCPE and St. Peters FC continued to win in the Thiruvananthapuram district `B' division football league in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.

Both LNCPE and St. Peters are in joint lead with 15 points from five matches thus making the last round match between the two sides on Saturday the final.

LNCPE blanked Venad Heros 4-0 after a slow start. Sijo opened scoring in the 39th minute while Micheal scored a brace in space of a minute (54th & 55th) to swell the lead.

Charley completed the tally in the 60th minute.

St. Peters defeated St. Thomas 2-0 for its fifth win.

Tomy (4th) and Roy (19th) scored the goals for the winner.
