McCarthy nets winner

London: Substitute Benni McCarthy scored with four minutes remaining to give Blackburn a 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Wednesday and put his side in the last eight of the FA Cup.

The South African striker, who came off the bench in the 60th minute of the fifth-round replay, raced down the left and cut inside Gunners defender Philippe Senderos before firing an angled 25-metre shot high inside the far post. It was his 16th goal since his arrival to English football from Portugal's Porto this season.

Friedel made another glancing save to push a 20-metre shot from Baptista round the post in the 71st before McCarthy came up with the winner.

A bitter pill to swallow

For Arsenal, the loss at Ewood Park came four days after a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in the League Cup final.

"It's difficult to take," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who was without several stars such as the injured Thierry Henry and the suspended Kolo Toure. Arsenal had two appeals for penalties turned down by referee Graham Poll in the first half.

Inter's run halted

Inter Milan's record 17-match winning streak in Serie A came to an end when it was held 1-1 by Udinese on Wednesday.

Trailing to an early second-half goal by visiting midfielder Christian Obodo, Inter hit back through striker Hernan Crespo in the 66th minute.

The results:

Italian Serie A: Inter Milan 1 (Crespo) drew with Udinese 1 (Obodo); Chievo 2 (Bogdani, Semioli) drew with Roma 2 (Totti (2)); Palermo 0 drew with AC Milan 0; Ascoli 0 drew with Parma 0; Empoli 3 (Saudati (2), Marzoratti) bt Messina 1 (Alvarez); Lazio 3 (Pandev, Siviglia, Rocchi) bt Catania 1 (Colucci); Reggina 1 (Foggia) drew with Fiorentina 1 (Mutu (pen)); Sampdoria 2 (Bazzani, Volpi) bt Atalanta 1 (Ventola); Siena 0 drew with Livorno 0; Torino 1 (Bovo) bt Cagliari 0. — Agencies
