Grand celebration planned for Gangubai's 95th birthday

HUBLI: As many as 700 artists from the district and neighbouring districts will performing on March 5 at the Hubli Sports Ground in Despande to mark the 95th birthday of Hindustani vocalist Gangubai Hangal.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar, who is honorary president of the Gangubai Hangal's 95th Birthday Celebration Committee said it would be a grand public function.

Various local artists and troupes from neighbouring districts would present art forms including folk arts as part of the celebrations.

More than 50 "mahila mandals" of Hubli-Dharwad had been involved in making arrangements for the celebrations, he added.

The Minister said five senior musicians above 75 years would be felicitated on the occasion. Those to be felicitated include: Chandrashekhar Puranikmath, Sangameshwar Gurav, Panchakshari Mattigatti, Vasant Kanakapur and Sheshagiri Hangal.

Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yeidyurappa would be the chief guest for the function, which would be spread across five hours. While the felicitation and birthday celebration would be of two hours duration, the cultural programmes are expected to take more than two and half hours, Mr. Shettar said.

Rangoli

As part of the birthday celebrations of Ms. Hangal, a 95-ft rangoli of her has been drawn by artist Shivalingappa Badiger at the Indira Glass House in Hubli.

The exhibition of the 95-ft rangoli and several portraits of Ms. Hangal was inaugurated by Shilpa J. Shettar, wife of Jagadish Shettar, on Thursday.

The exhibition is open to the public till March 5 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
