ALAPPUZHA. The Opposition UDF leaders in Alappuzha municipality alleged here on Thursday that all development works in the LDF-ruled municipality had come to a standstill. They alleged that the municipal chairman and his group were appropriating powers, virtually rendering standing committee chairmen mere onlookers. Congress council leader A.A. Shukkoor said work on solid waste treatment plant, which was scheduled to be completed by March, had come to a standstill. So too, work on a slaughter house, municipal stadium, shopping complex and municipal town hall. The municipal administration had not only failed to keep its promise, it had effected a steep increase in taxes as well, Mr. Shukkoor said. He said the municipal administration had not cleared its dues to the water authority, as a result of which several parts of the town faced shortage of drinking water. Mr. Shukkoor said the municipality had failed to spend even 40 per cent of the Plan fund. He said sanitation work in the municipality was not being carried out in an effective manner. Mr. Shukkoor alleged the municipal chairman was trying to create a divide among NCP councillors ever since the NCP withdrew its unconditional support to the LDF. Mr. Shukkoor along with leader of IUML in the council A.M. Nazeer and JSS leader P. Binu announced that a mass agitation would be launched against the misdeeds of the municipal administration.
