Focus on language skills, students told

    ELURU: It is the poor language skills and the lack of self-confidence that are playing spoilsport for many students who are in hot pursuit of cosy careers, according to Syam Atluri of Department of Adult and Continuing Education, Andhra University.

    Mr. Syam, who inaugurated a workshop on career guidance, student counselling and community awareness at St. Theresa's College for Women here,

    Mr. Syam said although some students were well informed of their study material, they were less sought after in the job market for their inability to fare well in interviews because of poor communication skills.

    He said the university had planned a string of career guidance and student counselling programmes in 20 affiliated colleges falling under Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari districts by the end of current financial year as part of the endeavour to equip students with the much-needed skills. Mr. Syam said students were being counselled to develop the habit of newspaper reading and vocabulary improvement with the help of dictionary on a regular basis during the programme.

    In a bid to boost up the confidence levels among students, group discussions and group interviews were being held during the career guidance programmes, he explained. The university had been engaging resource persons who got expertise in counselling on these issues, he added. Mr. Syam said the university had established a placement cell to liaison the job-seeking students and placement companies, besides maintaining of a fund of information on career opportunities.
