Gang snatching purses busted

Four women among six persons arrested

    Kakinada: The police have busted a six-member gang comprising two men and four women that is allegedly involved in snatching purses from bus passengers.

    A team comprising Law and Order Circle Inspector B. Lakshminarayana, Three Town SI Pavan Kishore and Indrapalem ASI M. Subba Raju arrested the gang members while they were loitering at the Kotipalli bus stand in Jagannaickpur area here on Wednesday night and recovered from them gold jewellery worth Rs. 3 lakhs.

    Those arrested were Nakka Sreenu, 25, of Muktesweram, Mindala Satyanarayana, 26, of Ayinapuram, Mindala Manga, 34, of Aduru, Mindala Lakshmi, 26, of Ayinapuram, Manya Manda, 26, of Muktesweram and Nakka Neelamma, 19, of Manchili. All are related to each other and belonged to the Uppara community.

    Presenting the accused persons and the recovered ornaments before newsmen here on Thursday, Additional Superintendent of Police A.V. Ranga Nath said that the property pertained to 11 cases - four in Kakinada town and seven in Kakinada rural areas.

    Mr. Ranga Nath said that the accused persons used to visit several villages selling colour beads and plastic articles and snatch purses and bags at bus stations and also while travelling in buses.

    He said that they were not arrested in any other cases previously.

    Road accidents

    On spurt in road accidents, mostly involving autorickshaws, Mr. Ranga Nath said that it was a matter of serious concern that over 600 people were killed in road accidents, a majority of them being passengers travelling in autorickshaws. He said that the police were coming down heavily on autorickshaw drivers and imposing heavy penalties.
